STOP Fountainview Project is a grassroots coalition of concerned local residents, parents and businesses working to prevent the government from building a 233-unit multi-family apartment building.
Why We Oppose
Wasteful government spending of more than $70 million to build the most upscale public housing project ever by Houston Housing Authority (HHA) that will result only in 233 units, which comes to over $270,000 per door! HHA could easily serve more people with more units at another location. Private sector developers build more upscale facilities for half the price! Where is our money going?
Undue burden placed on the local elementary school. Briargrove Elementary School is currently operating beyond its capacity and cannot accommodate a projected 70 additional students from HHA’s proposed Fountainview Project. Students already zoned to the local elementary school are being bussed to another Houston ISD campus 6 miles away! Why would HHA put even more children at risk for busing to attend elementary school? And contrary to what HHA is saying, the new Mark White Elementary School will not solve the overcapacity problem currently experienced by Briargrove, and MWE is not being built to handle HHA’s additional students.
Unfair government competition with the private sector. There are plenty available private sector apartments that rent at comparable rates in the area.
The significant increase in traffic will place a tremendous burden on an already crowded Fountainview-Westheimer interchange.
Lack of government transparency on the part of HHA. HHA’s Fountainview Project has been opaque from the community since its outset. Come to find out, HHA started working on this project in early 2014, yet the community learned about it in November 2015. While HHA likes to say “it’s been a neighbor” to Briargrove for years (simply due to HHA renting office space on Fountainview), HHA is certainly not a good neighbor for hiding this project from “it’s neighbors.”
STOP Fountainview Project will continue to work with our elected public officials to stop this bureaucratic driven boondoggle. If a political solution cannot be achieved, STOP Fountainview Project is laying the groundwork for a legal challenge to this egregious government endeavor.
